I'm out of the country for most of the week with limited internet access. Another work trip and I've come to realize I simply fail as an international travelling man of leisure.
The D&D campaign is wrapping up and some of my players are hankering for other settings. I wanted to run something for Dark Sun, but likely most are balking at that one. Maybe I'll take a short spin with the recent version of Traveller from Mongoose Publishing. Did a bit of gaming way back when with both the old 80's boxed set and MegaTraveller version. Looks like a fun game to run.

I play Traveller since the 80s - Classic, Mega, TNE, GURPS Traveller - and I have to confess that Mongoose's Traveller is a very good modern version of the game, very compatible to old sources and highly playable. One thing is not so great with Mongoose's Traveller: The artwork and layout in some of their books is extremely (!!!) bad, sub-pdf-niveau.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the artwork is one of the weaker points of the Mongoose line. The supplements are also not terribly strong in my experience; you can get away with a lot using just Core and a little creativity. Other than that, I heartily recommend it!
ReplyDeleteI've found the Mongoose core book enjoyable and not too worked up about the art (or lack of). I think the black and white really captures the feel of the original books. I will admit though that the quality of the book is a little sub-par given the price (about $40). I think Savage Worlds Deluxe edition was about $10 cheaper and was much higher quality product. Still, as commented by John, I think the core book is just about all you need to play. Not a bad investment for a space opera RPG. Thanks for the input!
